Apex Legends’ recent collaboration finally introduces mechs, though not quite as players might expect. Partnering with classic Japanese franchise Gundam, the event merges Mobile Suits with its roster of Legends through skins, weapons, and a series of crossover Gunpla kits.
In the game, the event introduces Gundam-inspired skins for eight Legends. “We thought long and hard about which Legends were the right fit,” Apex’s developers said in an official announcement. “After only a few dozen hours of fierce debate and a rewatch of original VHS tapes (subbed obviously), we set to work.” Crypto is paired with Freedom Gundam, Valkyrie with Wing Gundam Zero, and Alter with Gundam Epyon.
Outside the game, the collaboration takes place on Gundam’s home turf — model kits. The collection includes Real Grade (RG) Gunpla of Freedom Gundam, Wing Gundam Zero, and Gundam Epyon, with the colours and stylings of their Legends counterparts. The RG line is known for its extreme detail and advanced inner frames at a smaller scale.
The collection is produced by Bandai Namco, and is also sold through Apex Legends’ own store which has been run by Juniper Creates since 2022. “Gunpla is the gold standard for model kits,” said Ben Bliss, Product Development Lead at Juniper. “It’s exciting to introduce these to the store and celebrate the intricacy that people appreciate from Apex.”
The collaboration also honours the game’s remarkable popularity in Japan. The annual Global Series championship in Sapporo earlier this year was the most attended in the game’s history. It’s a bit full circle given that Titanfall is part of a lineage that Gundam pioneered. And though mechs are arriving to Apex Legends in a different form than players first expected, this collaboration goes all the way back to their roots.
The Apex Legends Gunpla kits are available on the Apex Legends shop and Premium Bandai until April 13, while quantities last.
